Hebrew: tachash תַּחַשׁ
Natural value: Used as one of the three layers of the tabernacle, the outer layer.
Spiritual value: The badger skin represents freedom from slavery.
Because ‘tachash’ is not an original Hebrew word, it is often translated as dolphin, hippopotamus, tortoise, etc. in the English Bible, but there were no dolphins, hippos and tortoises in the desert, and it would also have been very difficult to catch them. Tachash is a desert animal called the honey badger. A badger is fearless and takes on any serpent to kill it. It has a very thick skin, making it almost impossible for the snake’s teeth to pierce through and therefore the venom cannot enter to harm it. Yeshua also confronted the serpent head-on so that we could be free from the image of the serpent. In fact, He took the serpent image upon Himself and became sin so that we could become the righteousness of God (1 Cor. 5:21). Now we do not have to be fruitful from the image of the serpent anymore but can return to God’s original intention and be fruitful from His image, in which we were created (Genesis 1:28).
